1) Annual Meeting Early Bird Registration Discounts End Friday, April 25th

CARH's 2014 Annual Meeting & Legislative Conference is quickly approaching! The meeting will be held June 8-10, 2014, at The Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City in Arlington, Virginia.

To take advantage of "early bird" registration discounts, submit your Registration Form and payment to the CARH National Office by Friday, April 25, 2014. You can also download registration information by visiting the CARH website, http://www.carh.org/. Meeting registration fees will increase after the 25th, so register now!

In addition, in order for attendees to receive CARH's special group rate of $249 per night (for single or double occupancy) at The Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City, attendees must make reservations with the hotel no later than Wednesday, May 14, 2014. We anticipate strong attendance this summer, so we encourage all CARH members to make your reservations at your earliest convenience by calling the hotel directly at 703-415-5000 and identifying yourself as a CARH meeting attendee!

The official Annual Meeting & Legislative Conference brochure, which includes information on daily committee meetings and education and training sessions, will be sent to CARH members in May. However, for travel planning purposes, the meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, June 8 and adjourn at approximately 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10.

2) 2014 Scholarship Application Deadline April 30th

As announced originally in a broadcast e-mail dated February 25th, the CARH Scholarship Foundation is currently accepting applications for the 2014 James L. Poehlman, Gordon L. Blackwell, Jack Godin, Jr. and CRHD Founders Scholarships. Applications must be received by the Scholarship Foundation no later than April 30, 2014.

The Scholarship Foundation is providing four scholarships to deserving residents of CARH-member affordable rural housing properties. Each scholarship will be $1,000 per semester for educational expenses, with a maximum four years of funding. In addition, the Foundation will present to the managers of complexes where there is a successful scholarship recipient, $250 plus recognition in CARH's publications and website!

Qualified applicants must be a resident of a CARH-member property; a U.S. citizen; hold or be a candidate for a high school diploma or equivalent; demonstrate scholastic or work achievement; demonstrate financial need; and be accepted, or currently enrolled, as a full-time student at an accredited 2- or 4-year college, university or an vocational educational school. (Please note, a property is considered to be a "CARH-member property" if it is under the management/ownership of a national CARH member and the annual Property Training & Education Fee has been paid for that property.)

There are two types of applications for scholarships:

  • Application for Traditional Students – This application is for those students/individuals, that are currently a candidate for high school graduation or within the past five years received a high school diploma (or equivalent); and
  • Application for Non-Traditional Students – This application is for students/individuals, with a high school diploma or equivalent, who have been out of school for five years or more.


Both the Traditional and Non-Traditional applications will be considered for all four scholarships. Applications can also be downloaded from the "Scholarship Foundation" menu option of the CARH website, www.carh.org/.

This year's recipients will be presented at a special Awards Breakfast on Tuesday, June 10th in conjunction with CARH's Annual Meeting and Legislative Conference.

3) Board of Directors' Questionnaire for Candidates Due May 9th

Serving on CARH's Board of Directors is an excellent opportunity to serve the organization and impart direct influence on the affordable rural housing industry. This summer, three directors' terms are coming to a conclusion and CARH is seeking members to fill these vacant positions.

CARH members interested in serving on the board should submit a completed Board of Directors' Questionnaire for Candidates to the national CARH office by the close of business on Friday, May 9, 2014. The completed questionnaire represents an expression of interest in a board position, and therefore, may serve as a substitute for a letter of interest.

CARH's nominating committee will recommend new directors after careful review of each questionnaire received. The nominating committee's recommendations will then be voted on at the general membership meeting during the Annual Meeting & Legislative Conference which will be held June 8-10, 2014. The June board of directors meeting, which takes place during this meeting, will be the first meeting the new board members should attend. Board terms are two years long and board members may serve two consecutive terms.
